When did you start at CrossFit Bangor?

I started Onramp in October of 2012.  Five years prior to this, I took a spill on my mountain bike, breaking my arm and causing some shoulder damage.   I kept up with cardio routines but couldn’t even conceive that I would be able to do push ups, pullups or other shoulder intensive moves due to the injury.  I was empowered to do something trying personal training, physical therapy, traditional gym routines, all with little success.  A good friend suggested I join Crossfit Bangor.  I remember the day I walked in the door.  Mel and all the trainers were so welcoming and immediately diffused many of my anxieties about Crossfit and to this day are still cheering me on!

Proudest CrossFit accomplishment?

Double Unders.  It took me years. The hardest transition was getting out of the single, single, double mode.  I just couldn’t string them together. Lots of practice and encouragement finally got me there.

Favorite lift, metcon, or both?

My favorite lift is the Squat Clean.  Having said that my favorite lift to “watch” is the Snatch.  The Snatch is simply amazing, speed, mobility, balance….I only wish. I love all of the metcons.   Probably the most memorable are the Hero workouts like MURPH.

A movement or workout you’re hoping to improve this year?

I need to improve my Push Jerk.  I find my timing and technique really fall apart in workouts.   I end up doing push presses or some combination of the two.

Biggest surprise since starting at CrossFit Bangor?

I’m 54 and without a doubt in the best shape of my life! Since starting in 2012, I just can’t believe what I have accomplished!   Just ask my kids who have to deal with my bragging and showing off around the house.

Advice for new members or friends who have yet to try CrossFit?

I know a lot of people that are into cardio workouts.  Running, biking, and treadmills help keep us fit but they don’t exercise or develop our entire body.  If you want to change your life, feel good about yourself, learn new skills, improve mobility, and become part of an incredible community of people, just get started!  It is never too late, you are never too old, do it!

Favorite Maine place to recommend to other members or visitors?

 Acadia National Park during the “off season”.   If you can catch a nice stretch of weather before July 4th or after Labor Day weekend it can be magical.  The hiking, biking, restaurants are world class and crowds are manageable.   You could spend a week and not be bored.

Non CrossFit interest(s)?

I enjoy time with my wife Kristi and 2 daughters (now 24 and 22).  I love Mountain Biking.  I have a close group of people I’ve been riding with for years. I’m also into vinyl records and anything audio including tube amplifiers and big speakers.
