- When did you start at CrossFit Bangor:
My CFB story started officially back in 2014. I was a part timer – 2 weeks in Maine and 2 weeks in the durrrty. In 2015 I moved back to Bangor for good.
- Proudest CrossFit accomplishment:
Honestly it’s when Coach Tony commented on social media one day that he felt like I had progressed to The Yoda of WODS. Both because I love me some Star Wars references and because back then Tony and Mel were the main coaches we would see regularly. And they both knew my approach to workouts…blow my load early and sip on my water while in the active recovery position for the rest of the workout. I respected their opinions of my approach and to have Tony offer that unsolicited commentary was pure gold.
- Favorite lift, metcon, or both:
So many…all of the things…my favorite lift would be deads. 2 reasons…I always know Mel and Cherie are critiquing and judging my setup which only makes me better and I love the “time travel” moments after a heavy 1 rep max session. Murph is my all time favorite metcon. It’s an emotional journey into those dark spaces in your brain. And to have that moment with the CFB community is surreal.
- A movement or workout you’re hoping to improve this year:
So many…all of the things…mostly gymnasty movements (read strict handstand push ups) and anything overhead (overhead squats and presses). The common obstacle being shoulders. God created me with these knuckle dragging arms but made my shoulders out of balsa wood.
- Biggest surprise since starting at CrossFit Bangor:
Meeting my equal…the one who pushes me out of my comfort zone daily…the best cook and adventurer in the world…and my favorite domestic partner…Cherie. Should I talk about my emotions here? Maybe a podcast?
- Advice for new members or friends who have yet to try CrossFit:
Show up. Be patient. Trust the process. Be coachable. Oh and don’t show out at the holiday Christmas party. It ends badly.
- Favorite Maine place to recommend to other members or visitors:
Outside. Get out there and explore…play…use your fitness…be present with family and friends.
- Non CrossFit interest(s):
Eating Cherie’s food. Hiking and anything active with Maxx, Roo and Cherie. Watching my kids compete. Ice cream sandwiches. I love those.
- Additional thoughts you’d like to share!
I’ve been to a lot of CF gyms since starting my journey in 2012. Almost 40 different boxes. We have it good here at CFB. Only 1 box out of those 40 comes even close and it’s in Green Bay if anyone is out that way. But what I mean is the “it” is beyond the tangible…yes we have amazing equipment, flexible scheduling, the programming, etc. but it’s the people. The empathy, the camaraderie, the energy. It’s very unique and incredibly powerful. Sharing in the blood, sweat and tears is my “why”.
